The King's Staircase ceiling. Detail showing Venus and Cupid with swans

Verrio used trompe l'oeil to transform the staircase into an open courtyard, surrounded by two ranks of columns and pillars, with the sky above. He based the theme on a selective reading of Julian the Apostate's 'The Caesars', and extended it to embrace a wider iconography that associated King William III with Alexander the Great, and with Apollo
